If you have never done it before, mediation might seem a little tricky to you, especially when clubbed with paranoia whether it will work for you or not. But that only means you are normal. Whenever we are going to do something new, we are characteristically a little apprehensive. Its’ only when we begin to see how beneficial it is, then we actually start appreciating it. So, stop worrying and take the leap. If it doesn’t work, you can always drop it. But don’t dismiss it without having given it a shot.

So, first things first, what exactly is meditation? It is a practice of relaxing your mind, body and the spirit, voluntarily and consciously. Once you start doing it on a regular basis meditation can help you in many ways – it can improve your health, it can help you reach unprecedented levels of relaxation, it can improve your focus and concentration. It can also boost your performance at work by relaxing and rejuvenating your body and mind.

Even modern day medicine is slowly waking up to the advantages of meditation and a lot of people are advised to meditate by their physicians.

There are some myths and false ideas around the idea of meditation which need to be dispelled.

1. You don’t need to be in a special place to mediate. All you need is a quiet, comfortable place.

2. You can sit in any position that you find comfortable. You can even be lying down if that is what you want. Anything that relaxes you. But whatever you do keep your back straight and don’t fall asleep.

3. You don’t need a special time to mediate. Early in the morning when you are fully awake and before you start your daily routines and just before you go to sleep, after you have done your cores for the night are two best times though.

4. When you have achieved the position you want to meditate in, focus on your breathing. Slowly inhale and exhale. Relax your arms and keep your palms on your thighs. Focus your attention on the energy of your palms. Try to relax your eyes. You can keep them open or closed, whatever is more resting for you.

5. There is no ideal time period for meditation. You can start with as little as ten minutes and increase the duration, as and when you want to. People can mediate for hours at a stretch.

6. You have to make a habit out of meditation if you are seeking its benefits. Try to mediate at the same time everyday. How long you meditate is hardly important as long as you do it everyday.

In today’s world, where people have to deal with stress, work-related and otherwise on a daily basis, more and more people are switching to meditation to calm themselves and deal with various pressures of urban, daily life. It’s worth a try, if you have not tried it yet. It might change your life forever, and for the better!

Many of us miss out on the benefits of meditation because we don’t have time to learn how to go about it. In a world where people are constantly running behind things that they want or they think they want, people fail to understand how important it is to relax and breathe and allow your self to take a break once in a while to cope up with the stresses and worries. You have to understand that you need to let go off your stress and frustration to retain your sanity and maintain high-edged performances professionally. You don’t need to cling on to your anxiety to retain your drive in the workplace, if that is what you think.

Meditation will help you achieve more and perform better. It will allow you to reach your optimum potential and you will be able to push yourself to limits you can only dream about right now. It will help you to gain control of different situation and be on top of them.

If you want to give meditation a try, here is what you need to do:

1. Find a quiet place, without noise and unnecessary disturbances.

2. Sit in a comfortable position. Check your posture. Your back should be straight. A well lit corner of your room would be a good place to start.

3. Lift your head at an angle, so that your eyes are at an angle of 10-15. It should give you a feeling that you are looking ahead, over a bridge, into a distance. Be careful to not strain your neck or eyes. This would gradually slow down your brain waves and help relax your mind.

4. Breathe slowly. Inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Repeat. As you keep doing it over and over again you find that your brain starts to calm down. Keep a count, if you tend to get distracted. Start with 20 inhales and exhales.

5. Relax your body, one part at a time. Start from your head. Think of a warm happy thought and course it down your body. Take 5-10 minutes and feel your body relax slowly.

6. You will slowly enter an altered state of mind and body. Now you can choose any one of the following things to do- stay quiet and focus on the silence around you, think of something you want or something that you are working towards or you can pray for guidance / direction to your soul/mentor.

7. When you feel you are done, don’t get up abruptly. Tell yourself that you will slowly count till five and wake up from your meditation all refreshed and relaxed. Count as your exhale slowly. When you open your eyes, stretch your body gently, re-familiarize yourself to your surroundings.

There are various tapes and cassettes available in the market that ostensible teach you how to mediate. Even though it might be helpful in certain cases, meditation is a very personal thing. Find what works for you and chart out a meditation schedule that you can fit into your work schedule.

Every now and then you meet people who talk about how meditation has changed their lives. But there are many a different techniques of meditation and different techniques work for different people. Some people just sit in the lotus-position early in the morning, while some sit with candles all around and soothing music. For some people, meditation is just about sitting alone with themselves with a restful mind. Whatever technique you adopt you might face some difficulties when you have just started.
If you are new at it then claming your mind and keeping it from wandering can be quite tricky.

But once you get into it you will feel the benefits of meditation in no time. There are some ways, given below, to deepen your concentration and focus. These tips have been given keeping in mind some problems that you might face. If you are not familiar with the right technique, meditating can become quite cumbersome and so much so that it might actually get discouraged. So, before you turn your back on meditation try one or all of the following and reap the benefits.

One thing that you can do is use the center of your own self, your ego, as the point of focus. In different sessions you can identify with different facets of your personality and then work towards transcending it. Say, there are times when you feel victimized for example, concentrate on it and try to identify why you feel this way. Then gradually work towards overcoming it. Deal with your feelings and parts of your personality. Sometimes, when things are not going so well, concentrating on a happy side of you can really change your mood and lift up your spirits. It can help you forget all that has gone wrong in the day, even if it is only momentarily. Once you are recharged, you can think more clearly and deal with problems more effectively.

Another technique that was practiced in conventional Kaballah meditation was that you focus on a spot at the back of your head, an empty spot, a black void. Gradually your tensions and frustration would seep and vanish into the nothingness of the void.
No matter how clichéd it is, music can elevate you into new realms of consciousness. Plug into your headphones or bi-neural beats that alter your brain waves into synchronized symphonies, can really elevate you from all your worries. This is not only the simplest way to mediate but very effective even for people who don’t want to meditate in the conventional manner. It is also attractive for people of all age groups, even teenagers and youth.

These techniques can be adopted by anyone who wants to destress and are willing to explore the option of meditation. You have to be willing to learn. These things need time and a certain degree of belief in what you are doing. You need to keep an open mind and be receptive to the benefits.
